It's extremely rare and usually develops in early childhood, through a combination of early musical training and a likely genetic predisposition. Relative pitch is the ability to hear relationships between notes: intervals, chord qualities, and scale degrees. Relative pitch is what most professional musicians rely on, and it's fully trainable at any age.
